Burtown House is surrounded by 160 acres of mature parkland, a sculpture park, wild flowers meadows and fields of organic barley and oats which we are growing for a new micro distillery. Boarded by two water courses and forestry with a series of ponds and lakes there is abundant flora and fauna.

Front Avenue

Burtown House is surrounded by mature parkland with many ancient species of trees. All our hedgerows contain an abundance of wildlife. We embrace nature and our farm is now fully organic working with nature and the seasons.

Sculpture Park

The front parkland at Burtown has never been ploughed or reseeded and thus is a beautiful natural meadow with many old varieties of grasses and wildflowers punctuated with large stone sculptures by Sligo sculptor Eileen MacDonagh.

Meadow Walks

With 160 acres of what remains of our historic farm which once consisted of over 2000 acres we have taken down all the fences and have planted thousands of new trees, put in ponds, restored bridges and created beautiful walks where we as family have always walked. The entire farm is accessible with many interesting trees, plants and plenty of history.

Dogs

Dogs are welcomed here at Burtown and on return from your walk you can come and dine and drink at Jo’s Pantry Cafe which is a pergola style wooden building with a wood burning stove. We serve sandwiches, soup and sweet treats every Saturday and Sunday. Visit our Jo’s Pantry page for more info.

History

Burtown House sits in an ancient historical site, itself having been built around 1710 but with a landscape dating back to medieval times there once was a Walsh Castle, a medieval road and village where our 20 acre wildflower meadow now sits. This was once a diverse and original Quaker farm, encompassing a number of 18th century farmyards, many cottages for farm labourers and a sizeable dower house called Rathside which sits below the historic Rath of Mullaghmast, the site of Daniel O’Connells last monster meeting of 1843. Our ancestors hosted this great meeting.

Dine at Jo's Pantry

Our recently opened Jo’s Pantry Cafe serves both take away and casual dining in a new Pergola style building attached to the award winning Green Barn Restaurant. The dining space is a covered space equipped with seating for 32 people with a wood burning stove, lush planting, art and sculpture. There is further seating for 24 in the surrounding garden area. Serving fresh coffee, tea and drinks of all kinds including a selection of gorgeous natural wines, we also serve hot toasted sandwiches and seasonal walled garden soup as well as freshly baked scones, cakes and homemade biscuits.
