The Stable Yard House

Your own house at the heart of the estate

Tucked within the historic stable yard at Burtown, the Stable Yard House offers a relaxed and characterful place to stay for families and friends wishing to experience a little more of life on the estate. With three bedrooms, generous living spaces and its own kitchen, the house offers the independence of a private home while placing you just moments from The Green Barn, the gardens and the wider estate.

Your own house at the heart of the estate.

Set within the old stable courtyard at Burtown, the Stable Yard House is a characterful three-bedroom house for up to six guests — filled with family art, antiques and the layers of a house that has been lived in and loved over time.

Once our own home when we first married and moved back to Burtown, it still feels very much like a home rather than a hotel. Open fires, a wood-burning stove and an Aga sit comfortably alongside everything needed for contemporary living, creating a place that feels wonderfully relaxed and entirely individual.

A Home with a History

A Home with a History

The Stable Yard House grew from the old stable buildings at Burtown and many traces of their former life remain.

The high-ceilinged dining room was once the mare’s stable, while elsewhere old stone, timber, antique furniture, paintings and family pieces give the house its particular character.

At its heart is a wonderfully comfortable sitting room with a large open fire, books, paintings and antiques — and, hidden behind a bookcase, a secret door leading to one of the house’s three bedrooms.

This is a house to settle into: light the fire, put something on the Aga, open a bottle of wine and make yourself at home.

The Kitchen

The Kitchen

The kitchen is very much a working country kitchen.

An Aga sits alongside old glass-fronted cabinets and thick timber worktops, with everything you need should you wish to cook during your stay.

Or leave the cooking to us and wander across the courtyard to The Green Barn.

Gather Around the Table

Once the mare’s stable, the high-ceilinged dining room is now one of the most atmospheric rooms in the house.

A large rustic table, old Irish dresser and wood-burning stove make it a natural place for long breakfasts, family dinners and evenings around the table.

The Living Room

The Living Room

At the heart of the house is a wonderfully comfortable living room — a place to settle into after a day exploring the estate.

Filled with books, paintings, antiques and furniture collected over time, it has the relaxed character of a room that has evolved rather than been designed all at once. A large open fire makes it particularly inviting on colder evenings, while deep sofas and armchairs make it somewhere you can happily disappear for a few hours.

And hidden amongst the bookshelves is one of the house’s little surprises — a concealed door leading through to the ground-floor four-poster bedroom.

The Master Bedroom

The Master Bedroom

Large, light and south-facing, the master bedroom has a super king bed and its own ensuite bathroom.

Botanical prints and life drawings hang alongside antique furniture, continuing the very personal character of the house.

The Hidden Room

The Hidden Room

Perhaps the most unexpected room in the house.

Hidden behind a bookcase in the sitting room, this ground-floor bedroom has a rustic four-poster bed, a timber-clad wall and its own stable door opening onto the terrace.

It shares the large bathroom with Bella & Mimi’s Room.

Stay on the Estate

Stay on the Estate

One of the pleasures of staying at Burtown is having time to experience the estate at a different pace.

Wake up and wander through the gardens before breakfast, follow the historic farm walks, browse The Burtown Shop or simply return to the house, light the fire and do very little at all.

The Green Barn, Burtown Pantry, gardens, shop and walks are all just moments away, yet the Stable Yard House retains the feeling of having your own private home in the countryside.

Guests staying in the Stable Yard have access to the gardens throughout their stay.
